Running Book Reviews with Alan and Liz
80/20 Endurance Book + High Performance Coaching Course, by Matt Fitzgerald and Leyla Porteous
This episode is a little different because Matt Fitzgerald's book, 80/20 Eandurance, is a companion to a new coaching course created by Leyla Porteous, Director of Training and Operations at 80/20 Endurance. We refer to the course a lot, but all the information is also in the book. The book is divided into 12 chapters which cover the 12 topics in the coaching course:
1 - Principles of Endurance Training
2 - Training Intensities and Workout Type
3 - Guidelines for Balancing Training Intensities
4 - Guidelines for Measuring and Manipulating Training Loads
5 - Periodization and Peaking
6 - Keeping Athletes On Track
7 - Sport-Specific Considerations
8 - Strength and Mobility Training
9 - Coaching for Race Day Success
10 - Coaching the Mind
11 - The Ethics of Coaching
12 – The Business of Coaching
Leyla Porteous is the Director of Training and Operations at 80/20 Endurance and oversees existing and new training products and services. She is a lifelong swimmer, a rite of passage for the native Australian. She has a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion, an MBA, and is an Ironman University and USAT Certified Triathlon Coach. Leyla has completed numerous endurance events around the globe, including the Ironman World Championships in Kona, the 70.3 World Championships in Australia, and representing Australia at the Triathlon Age Group Championships in Chicago. When not working on training plans or with athletes you'll find Leyla trying to convince Matt and David that all our athletic kits should be fluorescent.
Matt Fitzgerald is an acclaimed endurance sports coach, nutritionist, author, and co-founder of 80/20 Endurance. His many books include The Endurance Diet, 80/20 Running, and How Bad Do You Want It? Matt’s writing also appears regularly in magazines and on websites such as Women’s Running and outsideonline.com. His online training plans have helped thousands of athletes of all experience and ability levels achieve their goals. Certified by the International Society of Sports Nutrition, Matt has consulted for numerous sports nutrition companies and he is the creator of the Diet Quality Score (DQS) smartphone app. A lifelong athlete, he speaks frequently at events throughout the United States and internationally.
